Frank Richard Miller – Argus Unit 21

I was a Radioman Third Class assigned to Argus Unit #21, trained at Port Hueneme, California and San Clemente Island, CA from July 1943 until shipping out to Barber’s Point, Honolulu, Hawaii September l943. We left Hawaii on an LST just after Thanksgiving ’43 and arrived at Kwajalein Atoll, Roi-Namur Island in time to witness the naval battleships shelling the island just prior to the invasion by the 4th Marine Division.

Although nothing was ever said during my training at Port Hueneme, CA nor whilst on the island of Roi-Namur we enlisted radio and radar men had a theory about the name “Argus” and it was simply that in Greek Mythology there was a God with an all-seeing eye named “Argus”. Since our purpose and method of military action was to seek out and destroy in the air and at night attacking bombers we could be construed as such an all-seeing eye through our radar and the skilled fighter-directors vectoring our night fighter aircraft.
