Extract from “‘RECAPITULATION SHEET’  for the quarter ending 30 September 1943″

“Remarks:  Argus Unit 8 was commissioned August 3, 1943, therefore, this is the first quarterly report.  August 22, 1943 forty- nine B-5(A) men and twenty one C-2 men were assigned to Argus Unit 8.  A complement allowance for Argus Unit 8 (BNP 639) shows an Argus operating allowance of 116 men.  A complement Allowance (BNP 639) has been received for the men of the B-5(A) and C-2 Units, however the original complement of B-5 and C-2 Units was divided between Argus Unit 8 and Argus Unit 9.  Therefore it is impossible for this unit to compare properly man for man the “Allowance” and “On Board” columns of Form BNP 625.”

Argus Unit 8 was decommissioned 31 May 1944  –  Unit personnel were all reassigned prior to or as of 6 June 1944 – see documents below – note the ‘undetermined decommissioning’ notations (click on document for a larger version)

***Part to Makin Island – the “Record of Argus Assembly” dated April 1944 makes this reference to Unit 8’s location.  No other documentation has been found to date supporting the Makin Island deployment.  Neither the declassified operational document below nor the Unit Muster Rolls show any indication of  movement  to Makin Island.  The Makin Atoll invasion was begun on 20 November 1943. —Update 20 July 2016 –  Documentation recently received indicates that two officers were detached from Unit 8 for temporary duty as fighter directors on Makin Island 13 January 1944. The officers returned to duty with Argus 8 on 17 February 1944.—

  1. My dad was an Ensign in Argus 8. He was night fighter director with the Unit. After returning stateside in 1944 he received more training before being assigned to the USS Gilbert Island, CVE-107, as a night fighter director. I have many photos of the C.I.C.

I’ve never seen this artwork for the Unit before.

  2. My father Chares Minium was on Nanumia with Argus 8,yet they list him as Argus 9 in one document.Have some pictures from one of his buddies.

    • Duke,

      Thank you for your contact.

Your father is shown in the unit Muster Rolls for Argus Unit #8 from 3 August 1943 to the final roster indicating final distribution of enlisted personnel with a transfer date of 27 May 1944.

As noted above, his name does appear on the Muster Roll of the USS LaSalle on 7 August 1943 and with the comment “Argus Nine Upon Commissioning” (see image above). The recapitulation sheet for Argus #8 dated 30 September 1943 indicated that some type of administrative action with regard to Argus #8 and Argus #9 personnel was in progress. We do not have any other documentation clarifying this action.

We have left the documentation regarding the Argus #9 assignments included to show that there was some action happening that affected both Argus #8 and Argus #9 personnel.

If we find additional documentation that explains this further, we will post it.

I am sending you by e-mail copies of relevant documents.

      Larry
